Prior to the opening of an ice-manufacturing company in 1883, the only way to obtain ice except during winter was either to import it from abroad or to preserve it in ice houses. Ice available in the summertime was especially valuable. Goryokaku was a major supplier of ice located in the Hokkaido port of Hakodate.
